WHERE AM I NOW?
CARD DECK

Created by: Jackie Flynn

The Where Am I Now? Card Deck is a gentle clinical tool created to help children, teens, and adults notice where they are in the present moment without needing to find the perfect words.

Through simple, open-ended images, the deck invites people to recognize what feels familiar, what feels true right now, and what may be needed next. It offers a visual language for body sensations, emotions, nervous system responses, relationships, and inner experiences, meeting each person with curiosity and compassion rather than judgment.

When It Is Hard to Explain What Is Happening Inside

Sometimes the body communicates long before words arrive.

A person may feel calm, uncertain, activated, distant, overwhelmed, guarded, connected, tired, or ready for something different without knowing how to describe it. The Where Am I Now? Card Deck offers visual invitations that can help them begin exactly where they are.

This deck supports people to:

  • notice their present emotional and physical experience

  • recognize nervous system responses without judgment

  • identify what feels familiar or true right now

  • explore what they may need next

  • compare where they are with where they would like to be

  • communicate experiences that feel difficult to explain

  • strengthen emotional awareness and reflective capacity

  • build shared understanding with a therapist, caregiver, or family member

  • move through the process at a pace that feels safe and supportive

Sometimes choosing one image is enough to help someone feel seen and begin from where they truly are.

WHAT’S INSIDE:

The deck includes 60 open-ended image cards showing a wide range of body positions, actions, relational moments, and internal experiences.

The illustrations include images of:

  • sitting quietly, resting, breathing, and becoming present

  • looking toward choices or standing between different paths

  • setting a boundary, pausing, or creating distance

  • leaning, hiding, running, pushing, bracing, or seeking protection

  • feeling surrounded, overwhelmed, small, disconnected, or far away

  • curling inward, covering up, holding something close, or reaching for comfort

  • sitting alone, beside someone, or within a group

  • listening, creating, sorting, playing, and reflecting

  • reconnecting with the body through touch, breath, grounding, or movement

  • approaching a safe space, another person, or a possible next step

The cards do not label the experiences or prescribe one meaning. A person hiding behind a curtain might represent caution, playfulness, fear, privacy, or something entirely different. A person sitting alone may feel peaceful to one person and lonely to another.

What matters most is what the image communicates to the person choosing it.

HOW TO USE IT

Look through the cards slowly.

Notice what feels familiar.

Choose a card that shows:

  • where you are now

  • what you might need

  • what you already have

  • what feels important today

  • or where you would like to be

You might gently ask:

  • What do you notice first?

  • What feels familiar about this image?

  • Where do you feel this in your body?

  • What might this person need right now?

  • Is there another card that shows what you would like instead?

  • What would help you move from one card toward the other?

  • Is there a card you want to move, hide, skip, or set aside?

Clients can point, sort, move, compare, skip, hide, or set cards aside. There is no pressure to explain every choice, and there is no right way to use the deck.

This is a reflection tool, not therapy.
Reach out for support if needed.
