WHAT I NEEDED
CARD DECK
Created by: Jackie Flynn
The What I Needed Card Deck is a gentle reflective tool created to help children, teens, and adults explore the care, support, comfort, protection, understanding, and connection they needed then—or may still need today.
Through 64 simple, hand-drawn image cards, the deck offers a visual way to recognize needs and longings that may not always be easy to put into words. Each image creates space to slow down, notice what feels familiar, and explore what may feel important now with curiosity and compassion rather than judgment.
When What You Needed Is Hard to Put Into Words
Sometimes we can recognize what we needed in an image before we are able to explain it.
The cards depict quiet moments of human connection: someone staying close, offering comfort, listening, reaching out, giving space, helping carry something heavy, or simply being there. These open-ended scenes invite each person to bring their own memories, emotions, and meaning to what they see.
The What I Needed Card Deck supports people to:
recognize needs, longings, and relational experiences
explore care, comfort, protection, understanding, and connection
notice what may have felt missing or unfinished
reflect on what was needed then and what may be needed now
approach difficult experiences with compassion rather than judgment
communicate through images when words feel hard to find
identify the kinds of support that feel meaningful today
begin gentle, emotionally honest conversations without pressure
Sometimes one simple image can help someone recognize the care they were hoping to receive.
WHAT’S INSIDE:
The deck includes 64 printable, hand-drawn cards featuring simple and open-ended scenes of human connection.
The images may show experiences such as:
someone staying nearby
being listened to or understood
receiving comfort
having another person reach out
being given space
being protected or reassured
receiving help with something difficult or heavy
being invited closer
being accompanied through a hard moment
having someone simply remain present
The cards are intentionally free of fixed explanations. One image may feel comforting to one person, bring up sadness or longing for another, or help someone recognize a need they had not noticed before.
There is no single interpretation. What matters is what the image brings forward for the person using it.
HOW TO USE IT
Look through the cards slowly.
Choose an image that reflects:
what you needed
what you longed for
what you wish had happened
what felt missing
what helped you
or what feels important today
You might gently ask:
What does this image bring up for me?
What feels familiar here?
What did I need in that moment?
What would it have been like to receive it?
What kind of care or support was I hoping for?
What might I need now?
Is there another image that feels more true or supportive?
There is no pressure to explain every choice.
Cards can be pointed to, sorted, moved, compared, skipped, hidden, or set aside. The invitation is simply to notice what draws you in, leave what does not, and move at a pace that feels safe and supportive.
The deck may be used in:
therapy
journaling
mindfulness practices
meaningful conversations
personal reflection
emotional and relational exploration
This is a reflection tool, not therapy or a substitute for professional care. Reach out for support when needed.
If you are looking for a gentle visual tool that helps people explore the care, comfort, protection, understanding, and connection they needed then—or may still need now…
