MY SAFETY CARDS

CARD DECK

Created by: Jackie Flynn

The My Safety Cards deck is a gentle, playful tool created to help children discover what helps them feel calm, cozy, connected, comfortable, and okay.

Across 52 illustrated cards, a little duckie explores different kinds of comfort: quiet spaces, nature, movement, imagination, play, and connection. Children are invited to notice which pictures feel good to them and begin discovering the places, activities, and relationships that help their bodies feel more settled and supported.

When Safety Looks Different for Every Child

Feeling safe does not look the same for everyone.

One child may want to curl up under a blanket. Another may feel better outside beneath a tree. Some children need quiet and stillness, while others find comfort through swinging, dancing, exploring, imagining, or being close to someone they care about.

The My Safety Cards deck supports children to:

  • notice what helps them feel calm and comfortable

  • explore different experiences of safety through pictures

  • recognize places and activities that help them settle

  • discover whether they need quiet, movement, nature, play, or connection

  • notice how their body responds to different images

  • build a visual collection of things that help them feel okay

  • communicate needs without needing the perfect words

  • return to supportive images and experiences when needed

Sometimes finding one picture that feels good is enough to begin discovering what safety feels like.

WHAT’S INSIDE:

The deck includes 52 illustrated duckie cards organized around different experiences of comfort and safety. Innovative Child Therapy

The images explore:

  • Cozy Comfort — blankets, soft chairs, hammocks, fireplaces, books, and quiet nooks

  • Nature — trees, water, flowers, sunshine, clouds, and peaceful outdoor spaces

  • Movement & Joy — swinging, biking, dancing, bouncing, sliding, walking, and exploring

  • Imagination — treehouses, castles, rocket ships, pirate boats, caves, and magical places

  • Connection — being near someone or something that brings comfort and companionship

The deck also includes a child-friendly How to Use the Cards card and a welcome letter from Jackie. Innovative Child Therapy

Different cards may feel right on different days. A child does not have to choose what an adult expects them to choose.

There is no right or wrong choice.

HOW TO USE IT

Look through the cards together.

Notice what might be helping the duckie feel okay in each picture.

You might gently ask:

  • What do you see?

  • What might you hear if you were there?

  • What do you think the duckie likes about this place?

  • What does your body feel like when you look at this picture?

  • Which picture helps you feel calm, connected, comfortable, or okay?

  • Is there somewhere you would like to imagine being right now?

Pick one that feels right for today.

A child may want somewhere quiet one day and somewhere active or adventurous another day. Both are welcome.

The deck may be used in:

  • Therapy sessions

  • EMDR

  • Play therapy

  • School counseling

  • Classrooms

  • Bedtime routines

  • Regulation and resourcing activities

  • At home with a caring adult
