METAPHORS FOR THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE
CARD DECK

Created by: Jackie Flynn

The Metaphors for the Human Experience Card Deck is a reflective tool created to support self-awareness, insight, and meaningful conversations. It invites people to pause, look beneath the surface, and explore thoughts, emotions, and life experiences through the language of metaphor. Rather than giving answers, each card offers a simple symbolic image that allows the person using it to discover what meaning the image may hold for them.

When Experience Is Easier to See Through Metaphor

Sometimes an image can help us notice something that has been difficult to name.

The Metaphors for the Human Experience Card Deck uses everyday objects, natural images, and familiar symbols as gentle starting points for reflection. A leaking cup, an empty fuel gauge, a wilted plant, a bridge, a locked safe, a maze, a shield, a birdcage, a puppet, a cracked bowl, a stop sign, a doorway, roots, scales, and many other images can invite people to explore what they are carrying, protecting, avoiding, hoping for, or beginning to understand.

This deck supports people to:

  • slow down and notice what stands out

  • explore thoughts, emotions, strengths, challenges, and hopes

  • connect symbolic images to lived experience

  • reflect on boundaries, growth, uncertainty, transition, resilience, and meaning

  • begin conversations with curiosity and compassion

  • trust personal associations and inner insight

  • notice what an image may be reflecting back

Sometimes one simple image is enough to open a meaningful conversation.

WHAT’S INSIDE:

This deck includes simple, open-ended symbolic image cards designed for reflection, conversation, and personal insight.

The images include everyday objects, nature-based symbols, and familiar metaphors such as a dripping cup, fuel gauge, leaking bucket, wilted plant, flashlight, well, stone wall, seedling, basket of apples, battery, ice cube, backpack of rocks, bridge, winding path, open lock, cracked eggshell path, shield, empty wallet, maze, stuck tire, safe, ostrich, nest, turtle in shell, gate, lamp, house with rainbow, broken record, birdcage, ball and chain, puppet, wolf in sheep’s clothing, love potion, tangled plant, volcano, ticking bomb, cracked mirror, butterfly emerging, frayed rope, knot, wave, fire, broken bridge, cracked cup, stop sign, burned candle, packed suitcase, glowing cracked bowl, signpost, gold heart, barricade, flower, open door, forest path, sun behind clouds, roots, money bag, scales, black hole, out of order sign, and welcome sign.

The illustrations are intentionally simple and open-ended. There is no single interpretation for any card. A bridge might hold connection, transition, repair, risk, or distance. A shield might hold protection, boundaries, safety, or guardedness. A cracked bowl might hold pain, healing, repair, light, or resilience. What matters most is what the image brings forward for the person using it.
