Let Me Introduce You to Terry Kottman
Terry Kottman developed Adlerian Play Therapy, an approach to working with children, families, and adults that blends the principles of Individual Psychology with the creative, relational power of play. She is the founder of the League of Extraordinary Adlerian Play Therapists (LEAPT) and the creator of the certification program in Adlerian Play Therapy. Known for her engaging teaching style and deep clinical insight, Terry regularly writes and teaches on the topic of play therapy across the country.
Terry is the co-author (with Kristin Meany-Walen) of Doing Play Therapy: From Building the Relationship to Facilitating Change and Partners in Play: An Adlerian Approach to Play Therapy, as well as the author of Play Therapy: Basics and Beyond and several other influential texts. She has received three Lifetime Achievement Awards—from the Association for Play Therapy, the Iowa Association for Play Therapy, and the North American Society for Adlerian Psychology. In 2024, she was honored with the Innovation in Counseling: Practice and Clinical Service Award from the National Board of Certified Counselors. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Terry is proud of her 46-year marriage to her husband Rick and her son Jacob, who brings her great joy.
