Let Me Introduce You to Laura
Laura Chackes, Psy.D., is a licensed psychologist and the owner of The Center for Mindfulness & CBT, where she specializes in the treatment of OCD and Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), including skin picking and hair pulling. She earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in 2005 and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at St. Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute’s Center for OCD, Anxiety, and Related Disorders (COARD) under the supervision of Dr. Alec Pollard.
Laura has been a leading voice in the treatment of BFRBs for more than a decade. In 2012, she started the first BFRB groups in the St. Louis area and was among the first clinicians in the Midwest to include individuals with Skin Picking Disorder in group treatment. She developed Mindfulness-Based BFRB Group Treatment (MBGT), an innovative approach that has been used to train hundreds of clinicians and is currently being researched in collaboration with Dr. Erika Nurmi at UCLA, with promising pilot data showing clinically significant results. Her latest contribution to the field, The BFRB Workbook for Teens & Young Adults, was published in December 2025. Through her clinical work, teaching, and resources, Laura continues to support therapists, caregivers, and individuals seeking effective and compassionate treatment for BFRBs.
